Another cinematic shot here, this time shot by David Sims and starring Malgosia Bela in a Louise Brooks-like wig, taken from an editorial entitled ‘Star System’, taken from Vogue Paris’ March 2006 issue (whose content was shot entirely by Sims). I like the contrast between Malgosia’s concealed body language and the open air and space in the backdrop of the black and white image.

Even with strands of of a purple wig covering her face, Raquel Zimmerman stands out in this eye-catching upper close-up image. Her eyes and lips look beauty campaign ready in this David Sims helmed shot.

Here’s an image of Natasa Vojnovic that is quintessential David Sims, featuring the model styled in a Yohji Yamamato shirt pulled down her shoulders and looking contemplatively into the distance. Minimalism with a bit of intrigue and emotion, which is nice to see once in a while.

Valentino under Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli may not be everyone’s cup of tea and I certainly haven’t loved every collection of theirs. However I have to say that all of the ad campaigns under their reign at the brand have been perfection. I like how Freja Beha Erichsen is concealed in the left hand corner of this image as if she is gradually reclining into her chair and out of the frame of the photograph. A stellar image from the Spring/Summer 2011 ad campaign series.

Another image from one of last season’s ad campaigns, this shot of Jac (and what appears to be a very blurry rendition of Sara Blomqvist) from Valentino’s Fall/Winter 2011 ad campaign, shot by David Sims, is particularly compelling, starring the former model somberly gazing out into the distance.

You can always rely on a collaboration between David Sims and Karl Templer to produce exciting results. That’s the case with this minimal shot of Raquel Zimmermann wrapped up in a puffer jacket hood. This shot was taken from the ad campaign series CK Calvin Klein Fall/Winter 2007.

A shot that has a bit of what can be called ‘austere glamour’. Tati Cotliar has a commanding presence in this simple but engaging picture shot by David Sims for the Valentino Fall/Winter 2010 ad campaign series.

A beautiful shot from last season’s Valentino campaign, shot by David Sims. Sara Blomqvist may be at the forefront of this shot with sunglasses in tow, but it is Monika ‘Jac’ Jagaciak’s intense expression and almost ghostly faded appearance that steal the image for me.

This vibrant and energetic shot of Dominique Hollington from the United Colours of Benetton Spring/Summer 2009 ad campaign is particularly memorable. I think I saw it plastered across the tube stations in London and the U-Bahn stations in Vienna respectively. It’s not like you would be able to forget that joyous smile and the movement of the clothes in this typically upbeat David Sims shot image.

Two of the images from Valentino’s Spring/Summer 2011 campaign, as they appear in print here. Julia Saner brings a youth and innocence to both the eye-wear and collection images shot by David Sims. Such an underrated campaign; still looks as good as it did a year ago.
